Understanding Your Dog Body Language: A Visual Guide
Share
Dogs communicate primarily through body language. Learning to read these signals strengthens your bond and prevents misunderstandings.
Happy and Relaxed
- Loose, wiggly body
- Soft eyes, relaxed ears
- Mouth slightly open (doggy smile)
- Tail wagging at mid-height in wide sweeps
Playful
- Play bow (front end down, rear end up)
- Bouncy movements
- Exaggerated, loose movements
- May bark in a higher pitch
Anxious or Stressed
- Lip licking when no food is present
- Yawning (not from tiredness)
- Whale eye (showing whites of eyes)
- Tucked tail
- Ears pinned back
- Panting when not hot or exercised
Fearful
- Cowering or making themselves small
- Tail tucked tightly between legs
- Trembling
- Trying to hide or escape
- May growl or snap if cornered
Aggressive Warning Signs
- Stiff, rigid body
- Hard stare
- Raised hackles (fur along spine standing up)
- Growling or showing teeth
- Tail held high and stiff
Important: A wagging tail does not always mean happy. A stiff, high wag can indicate arousal or aggression. Always read the whole body, not just one signal.
